What is DTV?
Digital Television is more flexible than the regular analog broadcasting most of us have now. Digital broadcasting provides clearer pictures and sound. It also allows television stations to multicast, (broadcast multiple channels instead of one at a time).
Where can DTV converter boxes be purchased?
You can purchase your own converter box at many electronic retailers across the country. The boxes are expected to run in the price range of $40.00–$70.00. But the NTIA, (National Telecommunications and Information Administration), is allowing all households to apply for two coupons valued at $40.00 each to go toward the purchase of the converter boxes.
-How do I know if my television is digital or analog? Check out your television set and see if it has a built-in ATSC, (Advanced Television Systems Committee), tuner. You can review the owner’s manual for your television set or go the manufacturer’s website.
What about closed-captioning after the transition?
You’ll still have closed-captioning on your television because manufacturers of converter boxes are required to provide closed-captioning.
What if I want to record from my VCR and watch television at the same time? This is possible with one converter box if you want to record the same program you’re watching. But, if you want to watch one program and record a different channel, this will require two converter boxes.
What if I lose some channels after switching to the converter box?
You will have “auto-tune” for new channels. You may have to scan manually, but some of the converter boxes will scan automatically.
